The Return of the Hooded Gown

If you follow celebrity and fashion news, chances are you have seen the showstopping trend of the SS23 show season  – the Hooded Gown.

Fashion enthusiasts would argue that The Hooded Gown first made its appearance on the runway with Bella Hadid in 2016 at the DKNY show. However, combing through the last few decades, you will see that the origins of this trend can be traced back to the ‘80s when the trailblazing Grace Jones starred as May Day in the Bond movie A View To A Kill. The style icon was often photographed with hooded attire in subsequent years.

In the early 00’s, Kylie Minogue released her hit “I just can’t get you out of my head”. About a minute into the song’s video, you see Kylie in a sleek white hoodie.

If you’re a fashion history junkie like us, you will find it interesting that one of the very first women to wear a hooded gown was Anne Boleyn. The hooded attire was worn by women of high status in the Tudor era to symbolise strength and power.

Today, the hooded gown adds a touch of versatility, mystery and not to mention comfort to the traditional gown one would see on the red carpet. It can be adorned and customised in several different ways, and the person wearing it can choose to make it as formal or as casual as they’d like. Margot Robbie, Kate Moss and Amber Valetta are amongst the celebrities donning the style on the red carpet this year.

At its core, the hooded gown combines the elegance and sophistication of a traditional evening gown with the casual and relaxed vibe of a hoodie. This fusion of styles creates an edgy and modern aesthetic that is perfect for the fashion-forward red carpet attendee.

The gown can be accessorised with statement jewellery and heels, or dressed down with sneakers and a more laid-back hairstyle. This flexibility allows for a wide range of looks, making the hooded gown an ideal choice for those looking to make a statement on the red carpet.

In terms of colour, the hooded gown trend has mostly been seen in monochromatic shades, with black and white being the most popular choices. However, there have been a number of bold and vibrant red carpet looks featuring hooded gowns in a range of colors, including bright red, electric blue, and metallic gold.

Overall, the hooded gown trend is a bold and fashion-forward choice for red carpet events, offering a unique and edgy aesthetic that is sure to turn heads.

You know a certain look is a hit when celebrities adopt a look they see on the runway. The next, natural step will be to see the Hooded Gown at Christmas and end of year parties this season. The outfit can be adjusted according to the dress code of the party – you can have a snug, sequined hooded gown or a casual knitted gown with hoodie vibes.

Time will tell if the hooded gown will turn into the dress equivalent of white trainers, but we can’t wait to see how the trend plays out.
